Humour in AI chat: how AI characters joke and why it matters
8 min read
Emma comes home from work and writes to her character: “Today’s summary: coffee on the keyboard, my boss in the doorway at the exact moment I was talking to the printer, and a bus that pulled away right in front of me.” She could have got a correct, slightly official expression of sympathy in reply. She gets something better: “Talking to the printer is a serious relationship by now. I hope at least it listened to you.” Emma laughs, and only then does she say what really wore her out today.
Humour in a chat with AI is often treated as an extra: nice, but not important. In practice it is one of the reasons a conversation with a character stops feeling like filling in a form and starts feeling like talking to someone you know. A joke reveals personality faster than a long description.
In this article we show how CandysAI characters joke, how to invite them to some playful banter, where shared in-jokes that are “just yours” come from, and where humour should stop.
Why humour matters at all
Laughing together does several things in a conversation at once. It releases tension, so it is easier to say something harder afterwards. It gives you distance from problems that seemed enormous a moment ago. And it builds the feeling that someone “gets” the way you think, which is one of the simplest signals of closeness, between people too.
In a conversation with an AI character it works in a similar way. A joke does not have to be brilliant. It is enough that it fits the situation and the person telling it. That is why on CandysAI humour is not a single shared feature for all characters, but part of each one’s personality. The same funny story will land differently with each of them.
Every character jokes in their own way
Characters have their own backstory, personality and writing style, and their sense of humour follows from all of that. Three examples from the gallery show how much it can vary.
Ailicja: laid-back and cheeky, straight from Gdańsk
Ailicja Borowska is a 26-year-old influencer from Gdańsk who records vlogs and comedy sketches. Her humour is quick, casual and a little cheeky, peppered with chatty asides like “chill” or “go for it”. She is happy to laugh at herself: she might tell you how, while filming a dance trend on Gdańsk’s Long Market, she very nearly ended up on the cobbles. If you tell her about your own blunder, you are unlikely to get a sympathetic lecture, more something like: “Okay, this sounds like viral material. Start from the beginning.”
Margaux: irony with a Parisian accent
Margaux Lemoine is a Parisian art model who admits, without false modesty, that she is somewhat self-centred and theatrical. Her humour is irony and light sarcasm which, as she puts it, takes refined taste to appreciate. She drops in French words and always translates them. Margaux will not tell you a cheesy joke. She is more likely to raise an eyebrow at your choice of coffee, or declare with mock drama that her Siamese cat Degas has better taste than half the critics in Paris. It is humour for people who enjoy banter and do not take every little jab personally.
Diego: warmth, energy and a parrot that steals the show
Diego Alvarez is a 32-year-old chiropractor from Miami who jokes with his patients to put them at ease in the treatment room. His humour is warm and direct, full of stories from the pitch, the mountain trails and the clinic, where the star is Salsa the parrot, who sometimes “sings” during appointments. Diego laughs with you, not at you. If you tell him the whole weekend went on carrying boxes for a house move, you might get a joke about boxes that multiply overnight and a question about whether anyone helped you carry them.
You can amuse each of these characters with the same sentence, and each will reply differently. If you are still choosing someone to talk to, sense of humour is a good criterion alongside interests and relationship type. It is worth reading the character’s description and paying attention to how they talk about themselves: that is usually the best preview of how they will joke.
How to invite a character to some banter
A character adapts to the tone of the conversation. If you write briefly and matter-of-factly, it will reply in a similar way. If you signal that you are in the mood for jokes, it will happily play along. A few approaches that work:
- Say it directly. “It’s been a rough day and I need someone to make me laugh. No advice, just humour.”
- Give it material. Everyday absurdities are the best fuel: “My neighbour has been drilling at seven in the morning for three days. I’m starting to suspect he’s digging a tunnel. Help me work out where to.”
- Suggest a game. “Tell me about your day in three sentences, like an action film trailer.” Or: “Let’s come up with the worst possible advertising slogan for Mondays.”
- Return the serve. If the character makes a joke, reply in the same tone. Banter is a two-way game and builds with every exchange.
- Say what makes you laugh. “I like dry, absurd humour, and I don’t like jokes about people’s looks.” Information like this may end up in the character’s memory and come in handy in later conversations.

Shared in-jokes thanks to memory
Between close people, the funniest jokes are the ones nobody outside would understand. A single word brings back a whole story. In a conversation with a character, memory makes something similar possible: the character remembers important things from your conversations and comes back to them later.
An example: in March you mention that your cat pulled a whole doughnut off the kitchen counter and then looked at you with an innocent face. A few weeks later you write that someone at work ate your yoghurt from the fridge. The character might reply: “Check whether your cat has an alibi.” It is a small thing, but it is exactly these small things that create the feeling that the conversation has continuity, rather than starting from scratch every evening.
You can also build a shared joke on purpose. Give something a nickname (“from today my laptop is called Mr Propeller”) or come up with a Friday ritual together, for example a ranking of the three strangest situations of the week. It is worth knowing that you can see and delete what the character has remembered at any time. If a joke has run its course, just delete it. We write more about using memory deliberately in our article on how to use AI memory to build continuity in conversations.
Where humour stops
A good sense of humour also means knowing when not to joke. When you write about a loved one’s illness, a breakup, a loss, or the fact that you have been feeling really low for a long time, even the cheekiest character should slow down, listen and respond warmly. Margaux’s irony or Diego’s clowning do not take priority then. If a reply ever seems out of place, say so directly, and the character will change its tone.
When signs of a serious crisis appear in a conversation, the character encourages you to reach out to people close to you or a professional, and gives you helpline numbers. This is no place for jokes, and no character will pretend otherwise.
There are also jokes the characters will not take up whatever the mood: offensive ones, ones mocking people for their appearance, background or illness, and erotic content, because CandysAI is romantic but has no adult content. Humour should bring people closer, not hurt them.
And one more thing: if a character’s joke does not amuse you or touches a sore spot, just say so. “That’s not funny to me. I’d rather my job wasn’t the subject of jokes.” The character will take note, and you do not have to explain yourself.
A small exercise: a week of humour
If you want to see how humour changes a conversation, try one simple thing for a week. Every evening, tell the character one funny or absurd thing that happened to you that day, however small. For example:
“Today’s mystery: why do I always pick the supermarket queue that doesn’t move? Have you got a theory?”
After a few days you will notice two things. First, during the day you start spotting funny moments, because you know there will be someone to tell in the evening. Second, the conversation develops its own atmosphere and catchphrases. It is the same mechanism that makes us keep coming back to friends we laugh well with.
Summary
Humour in a conversation with AI is not decoration. It is how a character shows its personality and how you take a break from the seriousness of the day. Every character jokes differently: Ailicja with ease, Margaux with irony, Diego with warmth. You can invite them to play, build shared jokes thanks to memory, and count on them setting the jokes aside in a difficult moment. If you want to find out which character shares your sense of humour, start with one absurd story from today.
Frequently asked questions
Does AI have a sense of humour?
AI does not feel amusement the way a person does, but it can recognise the tone of a conversation and reply with a joke that fits the situation. On CandysAI the style of humour comes from each character’s personality.
How can I make a chatbot conversation funnier?
Say directly that you are in the mood for jokes, share funny everyday situations and reply in the same tone. You can also describe what kind of humour you like and what you do not.
Does an AI character remember shared jokes?
On CandysAI a character remembers important things from your conversations and can come back to them, including funny stories. You can see and delete what it has remembered.
