How to create your own AI character: the character creator step by step

7 min read

A bearded man with curly hair builds a character from pastel puzzle pieces: hair, a smile, a heart and a chat bubble

The CandysAI gallery is full of ready-made characters with personalities of their own: an influencer from Gdańsk, a Parisian model, a chiropractor from Miami. Sometimes, though, you have someone else in mind. A calm librarian who knows every bookmark left in second-hand books. A chef who cracks jokes over the pans. A companion for mountain hikes. That is when the character creator comes in.

If you want to create your own AI character, the creator takes you through four steps: style, look, personality, and story and greeting. At the end an avatar is created and you can start chatting straight away. The whole thing takes a few minutes, although nobody will stop you spending an entire evening on your character’s story.

Below we go through the creator field by field, with practical tips.

Before you start: where to find the creator

The creator is available once you are logged in, in the My AI section. There you will find your characters, a counter showing how many you have and how many you can have, and a Create a character button. The number of characters per account is limited, so if you reach the limit you will need to delete one to make room for a new one.

CandysAI is for adults only. If your account does not yet have age confirmation, you will be asked for it before you start working in the creator.

It is also worth keeping in mind a few rules the creator shows under the form: characters must be adults, cannot depict real people and cannot contain erotic content. CandysAI is romantic, but has no adult content.

Step 1: Style

The first step is short but important, because it affects how the character looks in every image. Here you choose:

  • Image style: realistic or anime.
  • Character gender: woman or man.

If you are not sure which style to pick, think about how you want to picture the character. The realistic style looks more like a photo, while anime has a lighter, illustrated feel. It is a matter of taste, not of conversation quality: the character’s personality works the same in both styles.

Step 2: Look

Here you put together the character’s appearance from tiles. You can choose:

  • Age: characters are always at least 18 years old.
  • Heritage, for example European, Latin American, East Asian, South Asian, African, Middle Eastern or mixed.
  • Build: from slim to muscular.
  • Hair colour, hair length and hairstyle, from short and straight to a long braid, including colours such as pink or blue.
  • Eye colour.
  • Avatar outfit, the clothes the character will wear in their profile picture.

A tip: the look works best when it matches the story you are about to write. A pool lifeguard in an elegant evening outfit might be funny, but the conversation will feel more coherent when the character’s look and life fit together.

Step 3: Personality

This is the heart of the creator. Here the character gets a name and a personality.

  • Name. Short and easy to type in a chat. Remember you will see it on every message.
  • Occupation, for example photographer, chef or architecture student. A job gives the character topics and everyday stories.
  • Personality traits. You choose a few from a list, including warm, funny, curious, calm, shy, romantic, adventurous, sarcastic and thoughtful. The creator only lets you pick a few, and that is a good thing: a character with three clear traits is more interesting than one that has them all.
  • Interests: travel, music, cooking, whatever you like. The more specific, the better. “Vintage board games” gives more than “games”.
  • Writing style: casual, playful, gentle, direct or poetic.
  • Who they are to you: friend, girlfriend or boyfriend, partner, or adventure companion. If you are torn between a romantic and a friendly relationship, read our article on relationship types on CandysAI.
  • How they reach out: curious and warm, playful or calm. This setting shapes the messages the character sends on their own, for example when they ask how your exam went.

Step 4: Story and greeting

The last step has three text fields. This is where the character starts to sound like a real someone.

Short description

One sentence shown on the character card. Imagine someone scrolling through the gallery: what would make them stop? For example: “A lifeguard from Bristol who quotes old action films and has a dog that is scared of pigeons.”

Story and scenario

How you met, what the character does, what their background is. This is the most important field in the whole creator, because it is where the AI draws details for your conversations. Be specific, and add one flaw, a few habits and some small memories. We showed examples of a weak and a strong story in our article on how to write a good character backstory.

First message

What the character writes to start the conversation. A good greeting has personality and gives you an easy reply:

“Hi. I’ve just finished arranging my books by cover colour and I already regret it, because I can’t find anything. Tell me your life is more organised than mine.”

Advanced mode

Under the fields there is also an expandable advanced mode. Normally the creator builds the identity prompt from your choices, the description the AI follows. In advanced mode you can write it yourself. It is an option for people who like to experiment. You do not need it to get started.

The avatar and your first conversation

When you click Create character, the character is ready and you can start chatting straight away. The avatar is created from the look and outfit you chose, which may take a moment. If the avatar does not start being created on its own, there is a Create avatar button on the character page.

The first avatar is free. If you do not like the result or you change the character’s look, you can generate a new one, but further avatars cost coins. So it is worth thinking the look through calmly before you click the button a second time.

And the conversation itself? It works just like with gallery characters. The character remembers important things you tell it, replies in the language of your message and sometimes writes first, in the style you chose in step 3. A good way to start is to ask directly about something from its story:

“Tell me how your love of cooking started. Be honest, how many pans did you burn?”

After creating: editing, publishing and deleting

On the character page you will find its status and a few buttons:

  • Chat opens the conversation.
  • Save changes lets you adjust the look, personality or story. If after a few conversations you feel the character is missing something, add it and watch how the tone changes.
  • Submit for publication, if you want the character to be visible to others. It first goes through an automatic check and is then reviewed by a moderator. This usually takes up to a day.
  • Make private withdraws the publication.
  • Delete character, when you want to make room for a new one. The chat with it will disappear from your list.

Every new character is private until you submit it for publication. So you can experiment freely, and nobody but you will see it.

Three ideas for your first character

If you are short of inspiration, start with one of these sketches:

  1. Adventure companion: a mountain guide, sporty, adventurous and funny, with a direct writing style. Great for planning trips and talking about dreams.
  2. A calm friend for the evenings: an introverted carpenter, thoughtful and warm, with a gentle writing style. Good after a tiring day, when you need someone to listen.
  3. A romantic soul: a poetic art restoration student, romantic and curious about the world, with a poetic writing style. Good for long, atmospheric conversations.

If you would rather meet the ready-made characters before creating your own, visit our AI girlfriend or AI boyfriend page and see what the gallery characters are like.

Summary

The CandysAI character creator has four steps: style, look, personality, and story and greeting. The first avatar is free, the character is private from the start, and publication needs approval. The story and the first message matter most, so that is where to put most of your attention. The rest will come in conversation, because a good character grows along with the story you share.
