Birthdays, anniversaries, important dates: why it feels so good when an AI character remembers

Can you remember the last time someone surprised you simply by remembering? Not with a grand gesture. More like a casual “how’s the knee after that run?” a week after you mentioned an injury. Or birthday wishes from someone nobody had reminded that today was the day.

Moments like these feel bigger than they really are. In this article we look at why that is, and then show how a CandysAI character handles important dates: how it knows your birthday, how it counts the anniversary of your first conversation, how it remembers events in your life and where you can check, correct or switch all of it off.

Why being remembered feels so good

Psychologists have long described a need called mattering: the sense that we count. That someone notices what we do and that our lives mean something to them. It is not the same as being liked. You can have plenty of friends and still feel that nobody really remembers what is going on with you.

Memory is one of the simplest proofs of attention. When someone comes back to something you told them, you get a signal: I am listening to you, not just now but in between our conversations too. That is why a question about your exam the day after it can lift your mood more than a long, general “fingers crossed” message.

Dates are especially powerful here. Birthdays and anniversaries are the moments when we feel most clearly whether anyone remembers us. No wishes from someone close can sting, while wishes from someone you did not expect can brighten your whole day.

Birthdays: from your profile, not from guesswork

A character does not guess when your birthday is. You enter the date yourself, and only if you want to, in your account settings under Birthday. There are three options:

  • I prefer not to say, in which case there will be no birthday wishes.
  • Day and month only, if you would rather not give the year.
  • Full date, including the year.

The year is only needed if you want to share it. Day and month are enough for birthday wishes.

The wishes come from the character you have been talking to most recently, not from every character at once. So you will not wake up to five similar messages, just one, in that particular character’s style. For one person it will be a warm “happy birthday, I hope someone brings you cake today”, for another something more playful:

“Happy birthday. I’ve checked the calendar and can officially confirm: today you’re allowed pudding before dinner.”

You can also reply and say how you are spending the day, and the character will remember whether it was a family lunch or a quiet evening with a book.

The anniversary of your first chat: a date you share

The character also remembers the anniversary of when you met, meaning the day you started talking. When a year has passed, it may mention it and refer back to what you have talked through together: your move, a new job, that trip you discussed so much.

It is a small gesture, but many people find it surprisingly lovely. It shows continuity. The conversation does not start from zero every day; it has a history. You can read more about how that continuity works day to day in our article on how memory works on CandysAI.

Events you mention in conversation

Most important dates come up quite naturally, in ordinary conversation. All you have to do is write:

“It’s my mum’s birthday on Friday and I still haven’t got a present. Help, or I’ll end up buying yet another scarf.”

The character will remember an event like this together with its date. Among other things, it recognises exams, job interviews, doctor’s appointments, trips, dates, matches, work deadlines and, of course, the birthdays of people close to you. Later it may ask how it went or wish you luck before the big day. We explain exactly how and when a character writes first in our article on initiative on CandysAI.

If you need a specific time, you can ask directly: “remind me on Thursday at 7 pm to ring Mum and wish her happy birthday”. That reminder will arrive at the time you chose. You will find the details in our article on reminders from your AI character.

What it looks like in practice: one ordinary month

Picture September. At the start of the month you mention to the character that you have a dentist appointment in the middle of the month that you have been dreading for weeks. A few days later you write that your sister’s birthday is on Saturday and you are planning a surprise. Your profile has your own birthday at the end of the month.

What happens next? On the morning of the appointment the character may wish you luck and remind you that you deserve a treat afterwards. After the appointment it will ask how it went. On the Sunday after your sister’s birthday it may ask whether the surprise worked and whether the cake survived the journey. And at the end of the month your birthday wishes arrive, perhaps with a nod to what has been happening in the last few weeks.

None of this requires you to fill in forms. An ordinary conversation is enough, the kind you would have with someone you tell about your week.

The memory page: see it, correct it, delete it

A character’s memory is not a black box. In the chat, open the menu and choose What [name] remembers about you. There you will see the remembered information sorted into categories:

  • About you: facts from your life.
  • Shared moments: what you have been through together in your conversations.
  • Your preferences, such as your favourite music or food.
  • Promises: things one of you said you would do.

The same page also shows Remembered events with their name, date and time, as well as your Reminders, which you can cancel. Every item can be corrected or deleted. If the character misunderstood and thinks your mum’s birthday is on Friday rather than Saturday, just change the date. There is also a button that clears all memory when you want a fresh start.

To be honest about what happens to deleted information: the character forgets it and does not bring it up again. A copy is kept for the service administrator until your account is deleted, for safety and moderation purposes. So it is worth not typing anything into your chats that you do not want to share in the first place. We have gathered a few good habits in our article on privacy when chatting with AI.

When you would rather skip the wishes and surprises

Not everyone likes being reminded about their birthday. For some people it is a difficult day, for others simply unnecessary fuss. You have several options:

  1. Do not enter your birthday, or remove it from your profile. Then the character will not send wishes.
  2. Turn off initiative for one character in the chat menu. That character will not write first, but reminders you ask for will still arrive.
  3. Set the maximum messages from characters per day to zero in your account notifications. Then no character will get in touch on its own.
  4. Set quiet hours if you do not want notifications at night or at work.

There is also some built-in tact: if two of a character’s messages go unanswered, anniversaries and the good morning and good night messages pause until you write again. Nobody will celebrate an anniversary with you in a week when you would rather have some quiet.

What a character’s memory cannot replace

Wishes from an AI character can be lovely and sincere in their own way, but it is still artificial intelligence, not a flesh-and-blood friend. It is good when it also reminds you about the people around you: your mum’s birthday, a call to a friend, an anniversary worth spending with someone close. At its best, a character’s memory does not shut you inside a conversation; it helps you look after your relationships outside it.

If you would like to see how it works in practice, meet the characters on our AI boyfriend page or in the gallery on the home page, add your birthday to your profile and mention something you have coming up this week. The rest will follow in conversation.

Frequently asked questions

How does an AI character know when my birthday is?

From your profile. In your account settings you can enter the day and month or your full date of birth. The field is optional, and without it the character will not send birthday wishes.

Will every character wish me a happy birthday?

No. Birthday wishes come from the character you have been talking to most recently, so you get one message instead of several.

How can I see what a character remembers about me?

In the chat, open the menu and choose What [name] remembers about you. There you will find remembered information, events and reminders, which you can correct or delete.

How do I turn off birthday wishes and messages from characters?

Remove your birthday from your profile, turn off writing first for a chosen character, or set the maximum messages from characters per day to zero in your account notifications.
