AI girlfriend: what is it, and is it for you?

Only a few years ago, a “girlfriend from an app” meant a dating service and a real person on the other side of the screen. Today it increasingly means something else: a character created by artificial intelligence who chats with you in the evening, asks how your day went and remembers that you have an important meeting on Thursday.

People type “AI girlfriend” into search engines for all sorts of reasons. Curiosity, loneliness, boredom, or because they heard about it on a podcast and want to see what the fuss is about. The topic has gathered plenty of myths: some see it as a sad sign of the times, others as a digital cure for everything. The truth is less dramatic and a lot more interesting.

In this article we explain what an AI girlfriend actually is, what these conversations look like day to day, what you can and cannot expect, and how to find out in a few minutes whether it is something for you at all.

What an AI girlfriend is, and what it is not

An AI girlfriend is a character in a chat app who talks to you in the role of someone close. She has a name, an age, a job, a backstory and her own way of writing. Why people use it in the first place

The reasons are far more ordinary than media headlines suggest. These come up most often:

• Wanting to chat after a long day. There is not always someone to tell about the little things, and the little things want to be told too.
• Living far from loved ones. Working abroad, night shifts, moving to a city where you do not know anyone yet.

1. Do you enjoy writing? The conversation is text-based, so it works best for people who find writing fairly easy. No essays needed, short messages are enough.
2. Are you looking for conversation rather than a replacement for people? If so, that is a very good starting point.
3. Do you have a bit of curiosity and some healthy distance? The people who enjoy it most treat it as a new kind of conversation, not as proof that “the machine loves me”.
4. Can you put your phone down? It sounds trivial, but it is a good test of a healthy relationship with any app, not just this one.
