AI Roleplay: A Tool for Developing Social Skills
5 min read machine translation
Most of us know the feeling: you have the perfect reply in your head, but when the real conversation comes, the words disappear. Small talk at a party, saying no to a friend, a first date or a job interview can be more stressful than we like to admit. The good news is that social skills can be practised like any other skill. One convenient way to train them is roleplay with an AI character.
In this post we show you how to use conversations on CandysAI as a safe practice room, what to expect from them and where their limits are.
Why roleplay works
Acting out scenes is a long-established method. Communication coaches, teachers and therapists all use it. It works because it lets you rehearse a situation before it happens for real. Once you have “lived through” a conversation, your brain treats it as something familiar, and the stress goes down.
Chatting with an AI character has a few advantages here:
- No judgement. You can make mistakes, start over and try a different approach. Nobody rolls their eyes.
- Availability. You practise whenever you have the time and energy, even late in the evening before a big day.
- Your own pace. It’s a text chat, so you have a moment to think about how to put things.
- Memory. Characters on CandysAI remember what you tell them, so you can come back to a topic a few days later and see what has changed.
What exactly you can practise
Small talk. Ask the character to play someone you meet at a party or a new colleague. Practise asking open questions (“What have you been really into lately?”) and picking up threads from the answers.
Expressing emotions. Many of us find it easier to write “I’m hurt” than to say it. Try describing to the character how you feel in a specific situation, using sentences that start with “I”: “I feel sad when...”. Over time, these sentences come more naturally.
Assertiveness. Set up a scene with the character: someone asks you for a favour you don’t have the energy for, or keeps interrupting you. Practise a calm “no”, setting boundaries and suggesting a compromise.
Confidence before a date. Rehearse how to introduce yourself, how to talk about your passions and how to react when an awkward silence falls.
Job interviews. Ask the character to play a recruiter and ask typical questions: your strengths and weaknesses, a difficult situation at a previous job, your salary expectations.
How to set up a good scene, step by step
- Describe the situation. For example: “Let’s do a roleplay. You’re someone I meet at a friend’s birthday party. I’ll start the conversation.”
- Set a goal. “I want to practise keeping a conversation going for a few minutes without panicking.”
- Ask for feedback. After the scene, ask: “What went well, and what could I have said differently?”
- Repeat with a twist. Ask the character to be more reserved this time, or more talkative. Real people are different too.
- Write down one sentence you want to take with you. One good phrase is enough to start with.
To be honest: it’s training, not a replacement
An AI character can be warm, patient and fun, but it can’t replace real people. A real conversation also has body language, tone of voice, unpredictability and a give-and-take that no chat can fully capture. So treat CandysAI as a practice room, not as the destination.
You’ll get the most out of it if you take your exercises into the world beyond the screen. A few ideas:
- After a small talk scene, start a short chat with one person at the shop, the gym or work.
- Say the sentence about your feelings that you practised to someone close to you.
- After a practice job interview, send off one real application.
- Then come back to the character and tell them how it went. They remember your earlier conversations, so they can ask about the details and help you reflect.
When it’s worth talking to a professional
Feeling a bit nervous before a conversation is completely normal. But if your fear of people is so strong that you avoid meetings, work or leaving the house, or if it comes with physical symptoms such as a racing heart or shortness of breath, it’s worth talking to a psychologist or therapist. Social anxiety responds well to therapy, and AI practice can then be an extra at most. If things feel really hard, reach out to a local helpline, and in an emergency call your local emergency number.
Where to start
Choose a character you enjoy talking to and begin with the simplest scene: a short conversation with someone new. You don’t have to tackle the hardest situations straight away. Your first AI reply on CandysAI is free, and after that you pay with coin packs that never expire, with no subscription. So you can practise at your own pace. The chat is text-based and for adults only.
Every conversation you practise is a small step. And small steps, repeated regularly, really do change how we feel around other people.
